OCCLUSION THERAPY

Occlusion Therapy

Precise diagnosis and adjustment of the bite that forms the foundation of whole-body balance.
We focus on the underlying causes behind headaches, stiff shoulders and jaw discomfort.

ABOUTWhat is occlusion therapy?

The bite is not a matter of the mouth alone.

It may also affect the position of the head, facial balance and posture. At 369CLINIC, we provide care with attention not only to the teeth but also to their connection with the whole body.

A disordered bite may also be related to concerns such as teeth grinding, clenching and strain on the temporomandibular joint. It may also be related to general complaints such as headaches and stiff shoulders; however, these symptoms have various causes, and the bite is not necessarily the only cause. At our clinic we first carry out a careful examination and diagnosis, and after determining whether the bite may be involved, we propose a treatment plan.

Where necessary, we also consider cooperation with medical practitioners, and provide treatment tailored to each person's condition.

SYMPTOMSPlease consult us about concerns such as these

Concerns such as the following may be related to the bite.

  • You have been told you clench or grind your teeth, or you are aware of it yourself
  • Your jaw feels tired or heavy when you wake up in the morning
  • Your jaw joint hurts, or makes a sound when you open your mouth
  • You have a habit of chewing on one side only
  • You have ongoing headaches or stiff shoulders
  • Crowns or fillings repeatedly come loose or chip
  • Teeth are worn down, or have chipped in the past
  • Discomfort or pain when biting
* These symptoms can have a variety of causes. If a cause other than occlusion (such as a systemic condition) is involved, we will coordinate with medical physicians as necessary.

METHODTreatment

Based on examination and diagnosis, we propose an approach suited to each individual's condition.

Examination & Diagnosis

We carefully examine the oral cavity, the state of the occlusion, jaw movement, and signs of tooth wear or clenching. Where necessary, we perform examinations such as X-rays to form an assessment of the cause.

Occlusal Adjustment

We check how the teeth make contact and make fine adjustments to areas bearing excessive load. Occlusal adjustment is covered within the scope of Premium Cleaning.

Mouthpiece (Night Guard)

To ease the load placed on the teeth and jaw by grinding and clenching during sleep, we may make a mouthpiece. Adjustments are made while checking the fit.

Replacement of Restorations & Ceramic Treatment

If an ill-fitting crown or filling is affecting the occlusion, we may propose ceramic restoration that also takes the occlusion into account.

* Treatment duration and the number of visits vary depending on the condition of the mouth. Please ask when booking or at your visit for details.

RISKSRisks and Side Effects

The following risks and side effects may occur in connection with treatment.

  • After occlusal adjustment, you may temporarily feel discomfort or a change in the way your teeth come together.
  • When you first start wearing a mouthpiece, you may experience discomfort, increased saliva, or nausea.
  • If restorative treatment is performed, the tooth must be prepared (drilled), and temporary sensitivity (a twinging sensation) may occur after treatment.
  • Ceramic restorations may chip or fracture if subjected to strong force.
  • Improvement of symptoms varies from person to person, and if causes other than occlusion are involved, dental treatment alone may not bring improvement.

ALTERNATIVESAbout Alternative Treatments

For concerns about occlusion, the following options may also be available depending on your condition. After examination and diagnosis, we will discuss and decide on the most suitable approach together with you.

Treatment under insurance coverage

For symptoms of the temporomandibular joint and for teeth grinding, fabrication or adjustment of a mouthpiece may be possible within the scope of insured treatment. We have been providing insured treatment since August 2026.

Monitoring the condition over time

If symptoms are mild, we may choose not to begin treatment immediately, and instead provide self-care guidance with periodic follow-up observation.

Coordination with medical care

If systemic symptoms such as headaches or stiff shoulders persist, causes other than occlusion may be involved, and we may recommend that you consult a physician as needed.

FAQFAQ

How long does treatment take, and how many visits are required?
This varies according to the condition of your mouth. Based on the results of examination and diagnosis, we will explain this together with the treatment plan. Please ask when booking or at your visit for details.
Can clenching and grinding be cured?
Clenching and grinding have various causes, not only occlusion but also stress and lifestyle habits. Occlusal adjustment and a mouthpiece can help reduce the load on the teeth and jaw, but improvement of symptoms varies from person to person. We will first examine you and then explain the possible causes and how they can be addressed.
Are headaches and stiff shoulders caused by occlusion?
Headaches and stiff shoulders have various causes, and occlusion may be related, but this cannot be stated definitively. If a dental examination identifies an occlusal problem, it can be treated; if other causes appear likely, we will refer you for coordination with medical care.
Can insurance be used?
We have been providing insured treatment since August 2026 and accommodate both private (self-pay) and insured treatment. Whether insurance applies differs depending on the content, so please ask when making your appointment or at your visit.
